A note about Ceiling Insulation and How it Works
If you’ve been researching ceiling insulation and feel overwhelmed by conflicting or confusing details, don’t worry — the core principles behind roof and ceiling insulation, why it’s important, and how much you need are actually quite simple. Here’s a clear breakdown:
- Without ceiling insulation batts, a significant amount of your indoor heating and cooling escapes through the ceiling, resulting in wasted energy.
- Installing ceiling insulation creates a barrier that helps prevent this unwanted heat transfer.
- Most types of roof insulation, including Knauf Earthwool, fall into the category of ‘bulk insulation’.
- The effectiveness of bulk insulation lies in its structure, which contains countless tiny air pockets that trap heat and resist its movement.
- Generally, the thicker the Earthwool insulation, the higher its R-Value — a measure of resistance to heat flow.
- The amount of insulation your ceiling needs depends largely on your climate: more extreme temperatures usually require higher R-Values.
In case you’re wondering, insulation in walls and beneath floorboards works on the same basic principle — but there are two key differences. First, because the roof has a large, exposed surface area, it’s the most critical part of your home to insulate, as it contributes the most to heat gain and loss. Second, while wall and underfloor insulation is often limited by the depth of studs or joists, ceiling insulation usually isn’t restricted in the same way, allowing you to install as much as needed to achieve your desired R-Value.
Single or Double Layer of Roof Insulation
Roof insulation can be installed in either a single layer or multiple layers. The most common method is to place a single layer between the ceiling joists. However, some homeowners opt to take it a step further by adding a second layer of insulation laid perpendicular to the joists. While this two-layer method offers certain advantages, it also comes with potential drawbacks. Before choosing this approach, it’s important to weigh both sides. Here are the two main benefits of using a double-layer setup:
- It effectively seals up any gaps which might have been missed when installing the first layer
- It negates almost entirely the effect of thermal bridging
There are also two main disadvantages with the double layer option:
- It takes longer two install (though probably not twice as long)
- It makes it extra tricky to access your roof space, as the supporting joists are not completely hidden from view.
New Single Layer Option in 2024 – Earthwool R7.0 Ceiling Insulation
Knauf Insulation has recently introduced a new R7.0 insulation product specifically designed to be installed over timber joists, helping to minimize thermal bridging. These advanced ceiling batts eliminate the need for a double-layer installation, making the process quicker and more efficient. You can purchase R7.0 Earthwool online here.
Why Are Insulation Bags so Heavy?
If you’re familiar with working with traditional glasswool roof insulation and are using Earthwool for the first time, you might be surprised by the weight of the bag — it can feel almost waterlogged. However, the weight (up to 18kg per bag) isn’t due to moisture but rather the advanced compression technology used to tightly pack the insulation into poly bags. In fact, a single bag of Knauf Earthwool roof insulation often contains up to twice the coverage area of many other popular brands. For installers, that means fewer trips into the roof space — making Earthwool batts a smart and efficient choice.
Don’t Miss the Itch!
Knauf’s Earthwool brand has been marketed with catchy slogans like “Feel Good Insulation” and “Don’t Miss the Itch” — and for good reason. Installers who have worked with older types of glasswool insulation might not even recognize Earthwool as the same material. It’s incredibly soft to the touch and causes minimal itchiness. Any slight discomfort from handling it is usually due to the fine, soft ends of the glasswool fibers brushing against the skin, and a quick rinse with cold water is typically enough to relieve it.
